Jay is a big mouth with a big heart. He quickly gets emotionally attached and has had a decade-long crush on Sam, his childhood friend. Because he is loud and brash, he tends to scare people off, which is why he feels close to those who stay on the sidelines, like Ashley and his aloof behavior, or his cousin Lucy and her pathological shyness. Jay is also a nerd (comics and video games).

Jay had a hard time dealing with the realization that Sam and Ash were in love with each other. In addition to the heartache, he blamed himself for being blind and for embarrassing everyone. The longer he waited, the harder it got. So he gladly seized the chance to make up with his two friends when he got it.
